Ossa Update

The Director of Catholic University of America Press has overcome one of the major obstacles in preparing the typescript for publication. He has completed the initial preparation of the reading sheets, which Reginald is now reviewing for accuracy of transcription.

The Director also indicates that the copy editor may have completed a review of the text of our book by the time I meet with Reginald this coming January 2014. If so, we shall review all the changes suggested by the copy editor and communicate our responses.

Unfortunately, the Director has given no assurance that the book will be available in time for the summer programme 2014.

This wait – several years thus far – has been trying to some teachers and students of Latin including the authors.

Alternative

While awaiting the publication of the Ossa book, I recommend you consider the only chapter published to date based on Reginald’s method of teaching Latin, in which he presents:

1. the times and meanings of verbs in the indicative,
2. the principles of the subjunctive,
3. the sequence of tenses,
4. the difference between purpose and result clauses,
5. the gerund,
6. the gerundive,
7. the passive necessity formula.

The chapter is, FOSTER, R.T. – D.P. MCCARTHY, “Collectarum Latinitas” in Appreciating the CollectAn Irenic Methodology, eds. J.G. Leachman – D.P. McCarthy (Documenta rerum ecclesiasticarum instaurata. Liturgiam aestimare : Appreciating the Liturgy 1), St Michael’s Abbey Press, Farnborough Hampshire 2008, 27-56.

You may find his presentation of the Latin Language helpful for teaching and learning Latin. You may use the examples provided in the chapter, which are drawn from the short prayers called collects, as easy illustrations of the principles given, or you may provide your own examples from any and every era and author of Latin literature.
