Intermediate Latin for Liturgists

Intermediate Latin for Liturgists is intended to prepare students to meet the proficiency requirements to conduct master’s level studies in liturgy.

This course presumes a familiarity with the verb in all times of the indicative.

Students learn  to pronounce and read Latin from original texts, both ancient and modern. Students learn the principles and use of the subjunctive in real Latin literature, along with the natural meaning of participles. We use the method of Reginald Foster OCD, papal Latinist for forty years, the directly from the draft copy of his book in preparation. Our goal is to work patiently to develop a clear understanding of what the author originally said. No rushing to impress others, just clear concise understanding.

Instructor Dannie VowlesRequired book:

SIMPSON, D.P. Cassell’s latin Dictionary, Macmillan, New York 1959 or equivalent, including a small English to Latin section.

Sessions: Sessions are held twice daily from Monday 17 August for two weeks until Friday 28 August (not Saturday – Sunday 22 – 23 August). Enrol for the first week or for both weeks. During the morning session Danni Vowles presents an element of the Latin language to the combined student body of Intermediate Latin and Intermediate Latin for Liturgists. In the afternoon session the two groups divide and Fr James Leachman works on liturgical texts with the students of Intermediate Latin for Liturgists.

Daily sessions:
Morning: 10:00 – 12:30 with Danni Vowles
Afternoon: 2:00 – 3:00 with Fr James Leachman
