Papal tweeting in Latin

Papal tweeting in Latin

Listen to the interview on papal tweeting in Latin. The  interview was given by Msgr Daniel Gallagher who works in the Latin section of the Vatican Secretariat of State. It appeared on National Public Radio on Friday, 28 March 2014.

Learn Latin through Papal tweeting

You can learn Latin by considering these short phrases and then changing the expression in your own way. In another blog post we suggested how to use Papal tweets to learn Latin.

NON PIPIT PAPA SED BREVILOQUITUR

The dictionary says that ‘I peep’ is pipio, following the expression of Catullus. But, perhaps instead of saying, Papa pipit, “The Pope Tweets”, however correct that may be, perhaps it is more dignified and formal to follow Cicero and say, Papa breviloquitur, “The Pope speaks briefly”, “The Pope tweets”, as we once suggested on this blog in a previous post.
